Amid ongoing discussions and potential future regulations concerning PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), the cable technology industry is preparing for change.
Although no definitive bans have been enacted yet, FELTEN Wire & Cable Solutions, as a certified importer of BizLink and Silitherm, is already exploring innovative alternatives.
Why consider PFAS-free cables now?
PFAS-based materials such as PTFE, FEP, eTFE, and PFA are widely used in cables due to their excellent thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties. These fluoropolymers offer high heat resistance (up to 260°C) and exceptional chemical durability. However, at temperatures above 400°C, they may emit toxic fumes, raising health and environmental concerns.
Silicone as a promising alternative
BizLink has made significant strides with its Silitherm product line, developing PFAS-free cables based on silicone. Silicone materials provide a strong balance of performance and safety: they are halogen-free, heat-resistant (-60°C to 200°C), and offer high flexibility. These qualities make them ideal for use in industrial, medical, and infrastructure sectors.
Key advantages of Silicone Cables:
- Heat resistance up to 200°C
- Halogen-free, non-toxic in case of fire
- High mechanical flexibility and durability
- Suitable for a range of demanding applications
Limitations and other material options
While silicone presents many advantages, it doesn't fully match the performance of fluoropolymers in all areas. For instance, it may fall short in data transmission speed, dielectric strength, and abrasion resistance. Depending on the application, other PFAS-free materials like polypropylene (PP) or thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) might be more suitable.
