The benefits of electron-beam cross-linking

Special requirements are made for cabling in rolling stock such as trains, trams and buses. In addition to flame-retardant and halogen-free insulation, a long lifespan is expected. This requires high-quality and heat-resistant materials, where space and weight reduction are important.

FELTEN Wire & Cable Solutions BV provides both standard and customized cables for rolling stock made by Studer Cables AG & BizLink Elocab GmbH. Studer Cables uses cross-linking in its BETAtrans® cables to keep the insulation material as thin as possible without compromising the components. This is done by using fast electrons (beta rays). These electrons release their kinetic energy when slowed down in the polymer. The shell electrons cause the molecular chains to become interconnected, creating a three-dimensional network. Above the melting temperature, the material is unable to flow, and instead goes into a rubber-elastic state. This results in cables of exceptional quality that are compliant with IEC 60216 for material ageing and EN 50306, EN 50264, EN 50382 or ISO6722 for rail and road applications.
